Great web site!!! I now want to dig into my parents attic and relive the days of my youth. I still have many of the MMM toys such as the moon crawler & bubble, unitrack and starseeker. I just hope that the toys are in repairable condition. I think these toys led me to become a product designer, as I always loved building the future! Now I do it for real!! WOW!! hey does anyone want to part with their MMM figure????

Great stuff!! I just got a Matt, Sgt. Storm and Jeff. I want a Calisto to complete my team. I remember having a little foldup space station. It had chairs and foldede up as a carrying case. I didn't see it anywhere, or maybe I missed it. Any recall of this? I love your web site, brings back great childhood memories.

Thanks for the wonderful web site. My wife and I were talking about childhood toys the other day and I was immediately brought back to Major Matt Mason. My wife had never heard of him and was very curious about who this Man in Space was. Well, I found your web site and also E-bay!!! So, to say the least, my Major Matt Mason collection started again. Oh what I wouldn't do to have been smarter back then and saved all my toys... I had (based on what I have seen here) the majority of all the items offered.... oh well.... time to start again!

Thanks again and keep us informed! Brett

This site really brings back the good old days for me. My brother and I both had our own space crawler and one space station between us. Believe me, Major Matt Mason got a real good work-out. If anyone is interested, I know where to get a space crawler and a Major Matt Mason. They are not in the box, but I'm sure the price is right. Write me and let me know if you're interested.

Hello, My name is John Ruffin. I had MMM as a kid but they all went by the wayside long ago. I still have all my old Hot Wheels from 68-71, and have been collecting them for about 10 yrs. Yesterday I purchased an old space crawler for $4.50 in an antique mall, that appeared ok except for worn hubs. Upon "splitting the case" I discovered lots of "corroded" gears etc. Do you know where I might be able to buy another set of gears or a"wrecked" crawler? Is there a classified page on a website that might help me? Thanks ... John Ruffin Jr

I just can't believe that anyone remembers these toys besides me.

When I remember GI JOE (Never one of my favorites) everyone nods. But, "Major Matt Mason"??!!

I only accidentally found your site. Looking at some of thes low res. web pictures brought back memeories, believe me. It was funny to remember the way you could bend the arms--today's toys of hard plastic resin are cheap by comparison. I only had the major, a backpack with string, and the Venus alien--but I *loved* them.

How much would the toy cost todsy?

thanks for the memories--I'm 37 now.

Fantastic! words cannot describe the excitement I have reading and hearing about a piece of my life that I had lost forever and thought that I could not share with my own children. My children now ask if anything is new on the MMM front, they still giggle a little but it is changing. Again FANTASTIC! What a Jewel!! Everyone I had had contact with also have been so helpful and friendly and tolerant of my novice nature Thanks!

Boy, does this site bring back memories. I remember my uncle giving the Space Crawler and Firebolt Cannon one Christmas (must have been 69 or 70) when I was 4 years old. I totally forgot I had the Rentry Glider, too, until I saw pictures of it here!

The cannon was so cool! My favorite thing to do was to turn the lights out and watch that thing glow that beautiful rosy red color. I also remember my Major Matt Mason had Silly String dried all over him, from a battle with a silly string-flinging monster, no doubt.

I have no idea where they are today. Probably in a landfill somewhere near Detroit.

I have asked so many people if they remember Major Matt Mason and most of the time it's the smae response: "Who"? I am so overjoyed to find that other children of the 60's also still many fond memories of the Major. I woke on Christmas morning to the Space Station, the Space Crawler and two new figures. It was the best Christmas memory I have. I do a radio show in Anaheim California and have found a few others who share those memories of how cool it was to have the Major as a toy. I am just getting started collecting and this page is the best I have found so far, keep up the excellent work. TAZ 94.3 KIK FM Orange County's Best Country

I enjoyed your web site very much. While MMM was slightly before my time, I remember my brother having many of the toys. I saw an article in TOYFARE magazine (I believe March) about Matt and was telling my brother that I recognized the helmet. He said that he had a whole bunch of the toys when he was a kid. All I could think was AAAARRRGGGHHHH what that would be worth today. Oh well.

A really well put together site! I greatly enjoyed my MMM collection as a kid. As is so often the case, my goods are long gone. However, I still have a Whitman Stock #4426 Major Matt Mason Jigsaw Puzzle in collector level shape (undamaged original box and all the pieces). For years its been the only evidence that MMM was real when trying to tell my friends about the collection. Good job -- someday (with more space, ha) I'd love to get into the trading/collecting game...

The first time I ever saw MMM, was in the summer of 1969, not to be confused with the song by Bryan Adams, but it was true! At the time I lived in the state of Maryland in a small subdivison and my next door neighbor had gotten a new MMM Lunar Base Command set for his birthday! I was 6 years old at the time and as a child I did not know what it was, butit fascinated me!

Thank you so much for bringing my old friend back to life. My premier play time episode of Major Matt Mason: Man in Space was on my eighth birthday, May 29, 1967. I played with that station, crawler, Matt Mason, Sargent Storm, tractor, backpack, space sled, and the other accessories till 1972. Of course, he also had his trusty Lost in Space robot side kick riding along as he did constant battle with the "Zeroids". Remember them? They also had space craft and missle launchers. Their were other brave creatures that rode with Matt and Storm. I had to be different, so I made up my own names for them (even though they looked suspiciously like Matt and other toys in my room. Space medicine was great. A giant monster bit off Matt's leg and space medicine put it back on. after five years of play, his original white uniform was black, face pitted, helmet worn and like the Velvetine Rabbit, he became real. To this forty year old contractor, in my mind, Matt Mason is still out there saving the Galaxy. I haven't seen the toys in over twenty five years, but I picture Matt in a much bigger ship doing even more fantastic things. He had much more influence on boys back then than Capt. Kirk or John Robinson. Thanks for the Vine. We'll talk again. Gary Pinon Hills, Ca

As a boy, I always wanted Major Matt Mason and his friends, but I never managed to get them... Until yesterday, Keith's Space Station -and other fellow enthusiasts' websites- were the only way for me to relieve these childhood memories... Until yesterday, I said, since I visited a model railroader's bazaar yesterday morning to find some other treasured items of the sixties. At the very last table, my heart nearly stopped when I saw a couple of MMM figures still on their protective blister card waving at me! Horray!!

Needless to say, I tried to calm down at the outside before asking for the price. I finally managed to get a Major on his cat track, another one with his gorgeous flight pack and a lunar tent for approx. $ 50 alltogether. Everything brand new and unopened. But the best thing is that the seller told me that he may get much more items of this series from his wholesale toy supplier who has been in business for decades and is cleaning his attic now.

Oh boy, I can't wait until this guy calls me back to offer me the contents of the "huge box still standing around" with things like the "house with transparent walls"! If my lucky streak continues, I will have an impressive MMM collection in mint condition before christmas at a price to low to be called "a bargain". Wow! No more sad looks at the prices at eBay! Will this finally turn out to be nothing more than a dream?

Anyway, I already HAVE three very nice items! So Keith's Space Staion Website is of even greater value to me now. In fact, it is the definitive source of information for me! Keep on your work, Keith, it is appreciated around the world!

Best wishes from Germany, Ralph

Just when I thought I'd seen it all on the internet, I find this great web site dedicated to my favorite childhood toy! Untill now, I had forgotten how much I loved MMM as a kid. Those old commercials you post are great! Man, the 60s really were a long time ago, weren;t they? After seeing the commercials and the rest of your site, my three young sons love MMM too! I'm having a hard time making my boys understand that we just can't run down and get these cool toys at Toys R Us! I wish Mattel would rerelease MMM as I'm sure the next generation would enjoy them as much as we did! jay ryan, cleveland, ohio

I felt compelled to send you a note... I am a HUGE MMM fan...Infact I am quite obsessed with him... Had him as a kid, but unfortunately, we didn't have allot of $$$ in those days... I had the command console ship, MMM and a SGT. Storm... Long since gone, but I have such great memories of MMM... Since those days, I've always talked about him to friends and I always got blank stares - No one had him as kids (never heard of him).... It was maddening... As dumb luck would have it... I was on E-bay for the first time a few days ago and it hit me - search for MMM... There he was!!!!!! I am buying like a madman! Now I'm searching the web - found your site - WOW... I must say, well done! I have been perusing you excellent site with the excitement of a kid on Christmas day... Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make it happen on the net....

Take Care and Cheers!

Just checking out your site for the first time. I was born in 1966, and am not sure how old I was when I began playing with Matt Mason toys. I can remember distinctly purchaseing(or rather having my parents purchase)several items. I was very into these toys, and must have had half dozen Matt Masons over a period of a couple of years, along with Sgt. Storm, Callisto, Capt. Lazer, and the others. One of the reasons Matt Mason has remained a favorite is because my name is actually Matt.

I'd lost all my MMM toys by the time I'd reached my teens, except for one helmet that I'd come across from time to time until just a few years ago. Seeing the pictures of the toys on your site is the first time I'd laid eyes on any in since I had my own (twenty five years or so I'm sure). It really brings back some nice memories, though the figures arn't quite as impressive as I remembered somehow. I was still nice to see them none the less.

Thanks, Matt Crunk

Oh Captain, my Captain;

You must be around my age (39) if you are this knowledgeable about Major Matt Mason et al. I had several of the toys from this collection as a child of the '60s, but not nearly all of them. The Cat-Trac somehow eluded my grasp, as did the other astronauts (though I DID have Callipso).

The prize of my toys, however, was the Space Crawler. NOTHING would stop this unbelievably powerful vehicle.

Oddly, I have never forgotten this particular line of toys, and recount them with fondness frequently to my young bride who is WAY to young to remember MMM and the boys.

Any links you may have to re-acquiring some of these fine pieces would be appreciated. I don't know how expensive they are, or how hard to come by, but I'd like to find out.

Hey, thanks for your comprehensive web site - will be a great tool to reconstruct a MMM collection. This was definitely my favourite toy as a kid. All I have is one MMM figure now; and I have a great story about it! I work at a Los Angeles hospital where Ruth Handler (Mattel co-founder) is involved with charity projects. I arranged to meet her one day and handed her my MMM figure and asked her to sign it. She said, "Oh, the Space Man...I haven't seen one of these in years. What's his name?" I told her "Major Matt Mason" and she said "Oh Yes...he wasn't very successful" Kind of disappointing to have him dismissed like that, but now I do have a signed MMM!

I m from england,&first spotted major matt when i saw an equipment pak in my local market.I was six years old,&hooked!Unfortunately, this was i971,the year after matt was discontinued, and throughout my childhood, every christmas, which also happens to be my birthday,Matt aws top of the list, without fail, but he always managed to stay one giant leap ahead of me!Finally,in 1978,an age when i should long since have given up any thoughts of toys,i begrudgingly accepted that i was destined never to own a matt mason of my own.Flash forward to october of 1981,and an advert in a trading paper. From someone requesting anything for major matt mason.I could nt believe it!!I phoned the guy(steve salmon-please read this&get in touch!!)to enquire as to wether or not he d had any success with his ad& i was surprised by how much he had!!I met him outside Fulham broadway railway station where he showed me some items he d obtained, just by phoning old stores listed in the yellow pages. My enthusiasm was instantly replenished.tHE FOLLOWING MONDAY I STARTED GOING THROUGH THE TOY SHOPS SECTION OF MY LOCAL DIRECTORY .This was a time before toys r us had taken over the known universe& there were tons of long established toy shops around.Something like this teaches you the true meaning of the phrase numbers game, because i must have phoned sixty or more before i hit pay dirt. But when i did,it became the toy collectors equivalent of the gold rush. The city pram& toy co. in finsbury park. This was one such long-established shop & i was nt too hopeful util i phoned and heard"Yes i have got some of that.Been up in my stock room for years, gathering dust.Be glad of the space,to tell you the truth."My heart pounding,i collected my frind, ian price,& together we set off after school, by train,to finsbury park. When we got there, we found a magnificent looking old dusty building(sadly now demolished)Which looked very promising indeed.Told the guy who we were& what we wanted& with a smile he led us upstairs to his stockroom & said"feel free to go wherever you want, let me know when you ve finished& ill do you a very reasonable deal."Lovely guy.We turned the corner& my jaw dropped, because there, covered in dust, were sealed cases of equipment packs, all the original six!!

Keith, I don't know what possessed me to think "Major Matt Mason" tonight, and look him up; but I stumbled onto your website, and I must say, in spite of my 36 years, I felt like a kid again. This is BY FAR the BEST website I've seen ~ not just the best MMM, but the most informative, entertaining and nostalgic treatment of ANY subject I've seen so far. Come to think of it, there is something about Disney/Pixar's treatment of Buzz Lightyear that reminded me of MMM.

Great job!

Very Cool Site! I wasn't aware of the following that this group of toys had. I was born in '54 and with a younger brother ('58), we received the Space Station, Moon Suits, Firebolt Cannon, and Space Crawler for Christmas the first year since we were so enthralled with NASA and the space program. We still have all the pieces in a large box at our parents house. They are all in good condition after all these years. I am glad our parents taught us to take care of our toys and that they actually kept them.

Rocket ride into nostalgia! I remember the Space Station and the Major with fondness. I seem to remember the Halloween costume had a special feature. A light switch on the canister blinked the light. You are doing important work here. I salute you! Jim Kvicala - Watkinsville GA

Thanks for a blast from the past. I haven't seen these toys in 20 years and it's eerie. I was born in the early 60's and at the age of 8 or so my brother and I received loads of this stuff from a neighbor who was drafted off to Vietnam. These were well-used toys, but we had it all from the station on down.

Your site brings back memories - the helmets that wouldn't stay on...the poor guys without heads, the broken limbs... space exploration was never intended for the faint of heart!

Thanks a million!

Encore mille merci.

Best regards.

Funny,i have nt visited you in a while. Was reading through your old entries, and found a really long one.Started reading it,then realised it was one i d done last time i was here.Typing skills have improved considerably since then,i m happy to add!!Ca nt believe Mattel have reissued those cruddy masters of the universe toys from the mid 80s,yet neglected the good major.Perhaps they ve been put off by the lack of interest in Playing Mantis s reissue of Captain Action.A great pity if this is so.And i d like to reiterate,Steve Salmon,if you read this, drop me an e-mail,would be great to catch up with you after nearly twenty years!!

Wow! What a blast from the past! I can remember buying a whole bunch of MMM stuff at a garage sale for $3. However, this was nearly 20 years ago and my MMM collection was played with nearly to death only to be sold to someone else at one of our own garage sales. Your site brings back lots of memories. I can still remember wanting that red cat-track for Christmas more then any other toy. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Incredible site! It brings me back to the living room floor, christmas of 1967. Jet pack, crawler, sled and Mason. The next christmas added the space station(oh those crystal blue shields), Calisto and I think the lazer cannon. Childhood is a magical time which we carry with us forever. Perhaps the ability to remember the feeling is that is which keeps us young.

Adding to my comment about the MMM Club cap and card. I remember it was a big thing to convince my mom at the time to send away for it. The cap is a Air force majors cap with the MMM logo and detail. Most of my MMM stuff has been played to death but is still around. The Mattel club newsletter was traded to my friend about 20 years ago.

I had a MMM Space Station and sled when I was a kid. Seeing him now made this 38 yr old feel the same excitement once again. I'd forgotten the alien Callisto till I saw your site. The 60's had a lot of boys that dreamed of being astronauts including me. MMM was a big part of the mystique. Never made to space but joined the Air Force. Thanks and great site.

I called Matell myself and the woman who anserd told me it was cansled. that was all I got from her. I was serprised to find you. When I first saw the alliens movie and saw the exo,I mean, supernaut power limbs I thought of MMM right off what a rip off. That movie did bring back the memeries of this toy which I had forgotten about . I loved this sight. I'm 38 my brother who was a year yunger can't remember the toy. Fantastic! I enjoyed many of the MMM toys when I was a kid; unfortunately all my toys were lost in a fire in the early '80s... Must have been that liquid rocket propellant Sgt. Storm was always fooling around with...

One accessory I didn't see listed here (excuse me if I skipped a page or two), is a vehicle about the same size as the Space Crawler, but instread of having the rotating four-legged "wheels", it had a large center-mounted transparent sphere, in which an astronaut could ride. Wicked cool fun.

What was it called?

Anyway, great site! I'll be back.

Hey Keith,

You have to have one of the best Major Matt Mason sites! At this time of the year, those childhood memories of the Major and his pals come back, as I was lucky enough to grow up in the '60s, and Mattel's Man in Space and his accesories were often to be found under the Christmas tree! He may have had a short career, but the Major's only rival might have been G.I. Joe! As I got older, both Joe and Maj. Mason were kept on "Active Duty," as I made short animated movies using these articulated figures while I was in junior high and high school. While I never went into professional filmmaking, I do write professionally about the film industry and have started getting some fiction out there, as well. Who knows, maybe one day I'll dust off the old 8mm movie camera, pop in a roll of film (yes, they still make the stuff!) and make my buddies endure yet another 8mm epic! Until then, I'll keep dropping by your website to revisit "old friends."

Very cool site. Brings back alot of memories. My parents discarded the broken MMM items we had and gave away my book to someone else. Low and behold about 15 years ago, one evening while walking home I spotted a hole collection somebody was throwing away in the trash. I'm headed to the attic to dig up old Matt now. Oh ya, I think I once had that Major Lazer box you wanted, oops.

I loved the commercials, and dare I say, remember them as well. Major Matt Mason played a key role in my life when I was young. I remember the black and white commercial, and had forgotten about the accessories that came with him. Many thanks for the boyhood memories you have brought back.. Just wish I had kept the toys I had 30 - 40 years ago...

I was born on an Army base located near Norfolk, Virginia 10/15/1959. I grew up playing with Major Matt Mason, among other toys of the same era. I still have my Major Matt Mason without his space helmet. My cousin of approximately the same age, had the space station and I remember him having an african american astronaut in an orange suit. I have handed my toys down to my son who was born 07/02/1987.
