"This Hawk Model
Company Silly Surfer kit is the first figure kit I built
when I got back into modeling in the early 1990's, and as such was also the
first time I experimented with chalks and drybrushing to replicate shadows
and skin tones. I was very pleased with the results, and this kit continues
to be a favorite each time it is displayed in public.
The kit is painted in Tamaya watercolor paints, and the surfboard is done in
Testors' Stop Light amber metalflake, with the decal on the surfboard taken
from AMT's reissued Double Dragster kit. The figure is coated with flatcoat
fixer and the wave and surfboard are finished in Boyd's Glosscoat. One
further production note of interest...the fit of the pieces that made up the
wave base were pretty bad...so much so that it took almost half a can of
Bondo, plastered into the underside of the base, and countless hours of
sanding, to get the thing smoothed out enough to make it look like water! But
I think even a Hodad could appreciate the way this kit turned out!"
